The Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) were established through the Older Americans Act amendments of 1972 in order to provide a local structure for addressing the needs and concerns of older persons. The SEAGO Social Services Block Grant Program manages Social Services Block Grants received by SEAGO. SEAGO develops an annual Social Service Block Grant plan based on input received from its members and submits this plan to the Department of Economic Security for funding.
The SEAGO Community Development Program assists member entities in applying to the Arizona Department of Housing for annual Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), which is funded by the federal Housing and Urban Development department (HUD).
The SEAGO Housing Program consists of two primary areas. These are: the Housing Counseling Program which counsels families in the areas of Homeownership Education; Post-Purchase Education; Rental Questions; Delinquency/Default Assistance; Reverse Mortgages; and Predatory Lending; and the Your Way Home AZ, a program for the purchase of foreclosed homes.
The SEAGO Transportation Program receives funding from the Arizona Department of Transportation, the Federal Highways Administration, and the Federal Transit Administration for multi-modal transportation projects in the region. Additionally, SEAGO assists its member entities in applying for funds from ADOT for different projects to include road construction, transit, and transportation enhancement projects.
The SEAGO Economic Development Program. Funded by a Planning Grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration (EDA), SEAGO's Economic Development office supports long-range, regional planning among SEAGO's member entities by providing technical assistance and planning services to any county, city or town in the SEAGO region. Current program areas of emphasis: tourism; agriculture; business retention and expansion; communication and information technology; and comprehensive planning activities. SEAGO has also published a map to promote and guide travel in Southeastern Arizona and Northern Sonora. Please view our interactive preview of the map. The SEAGO Environmental Program is responsible for assisting SEAGO members with processing Section 208 Amendments to the Area Wide Water Quality Management Plan. Section 208 of the Clean Water Act requires that all new facilities or changes to existing facilities must be consistent with the existing area wide plan.
